It's the oldest town in Tarrant County, it's named after literal grapes, and it goes absolutely all-in on December.
Grapevine pulls off something rare: it's genuinely historic and genuinely fun. Main Street looks like a movie set, the wine is real, and the whole place has a personality that Colleyville and Southlake, lovely as they are, don't quite share. Here's what makes it tick.
Yes, it's named after grapes
Settlers arrived in 1844 and named the place for the wild mustang grapes growing across what they called the "Grape Vine Prairie." That makes Grapevine the oldest settlement in Tarrant County, founded a full year before Texas even joined the United States. A year earlier, in 1843, Sam Houston met here with leaders of ten Native American tribes to sign a peace treaty. A lot of history for a town most people associate with the airport.
Meet "Puffy," an 1896 steam locomotive on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad: the oldest continuously operating steam locomotive in the South. It still runs excursions to the Fort Worth Stockyards today, 130 years later.
There's wine on Main Street. A lot of it.
Historic Downtown Grapevine packs about half a dozen wineries and tasting rooms into a few walkable blocks, mixed in with the Glockenspiel clock tower, the Palace Arts Center, local shops, and restaurants. It's the kind of downtown where you can spend a whole Saturday and never move your car, which, in DFW, is its own small miracle.
The town that takes Christmas personally
Grapevine isn't shy about its title: the Christmas Capital of Texas. Every winter it throws more than 1,400 events across roughly 40 days: the North Pole Express train, the Parade of Lights, the whole town glowing. If you've got kids, buying here basically comes with a seasonal theme park attached.
Buying in Grapevine
Grapevine's housing mix is wonderfully varied: historic homes near Main Street, lakeside spots near Grapevine Lake, and newer construction throughout the 76051 zip. That range means buyers here use just about every loan type, from FHA and conventional to VA. A quick conversation can tell you which one fits your plans and your budget.
Thinking about calling Grapevine home? Let's map out your options before the next Parade of Lights.
